Christopher Chan BSc (Hons) PhD FRCS (Gen Surg)
Christopher has extensive experience in the field of Gastrointestinal Surgery with a unique understanding of bowel disorders including incontinence & constipation. This expertise is used to full effect at Barts and The London NHS Trust where he is Senior Lecturer, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon.
Christopher has a broad experience in elective and emergency surgery, using both open and laparoscopic techniques. His specific area of expertise, however, lies in complex colorectal diseases. These include colorectal cancer, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative colitis, enterocutaneous fistula, Intestinal Failure, complex anal fistula, anorectal and pelvic floor problems (incontinence, evacuatory difficulty, constipation) and pelvic floor reconstruction.
As a member of a very active University department of surgery, Christopher's research interests are varied. They include exploring new techniques for the treatment of faecal incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction, ultra-low sphincter preserving resections and inflammatory bowel disease.
He is also heavily involved in teaching and lecturing at all levels, including MB BS, MRCS, Intercollegiate FRCS examinations and Royal College of Surgeons courses.
Qualifications and Accreditations
Christopher graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital, London in 1991. He then progressed onto prestigious surgical training programmes in Cambridge and London.
After his surgical training, he was awarded a prestigious MRC Clinical fellowship researching pelvic floor dysfunction - culminating in a PhD. He then went onto further sub-specialist colorectal training fellowships to Sydney, Paris and St Mark's Hospital, Harrow.
Christopher is widely recognised for his achievements, and regularly gets the chance to impart some of his knowledge as an invited speaker at national and international conferences. He is also a Principal Internal MB BS examiner and Surgical Lead for Queen Mary and External Examiner for Imperial College School of Medicine, London.
