Dr Matthew Banks BSc MB FRCP PhD

Matthew is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Director of Endoscopy at University College London Hospital NHS Trust. He is also able to pass on his considerable expertise as one of their Honorary Senior Lecturers.

Special Interests

In addition to his wealth of expertise in the field of general gastroenterology & hepatology, Matthew's special interests include Gastrointestinal Cancers, Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease, Barrett's Oesophagus and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Having a PhD on the mechanisms of diarrhoea, he also has particular expertise in the investigation and management of this condition.

Matthew's endoscopic skills also set him apart. He was able to refine his techniques during a sabbatical in Tokyo's prestigious National Cancer Centre. He is now one of a select few National Endoscopy trainers with exemplary performance standards, particularly in colonoscopy.

Procedures Matthew undertakes include colonoscopy, gastroscopy, therapeutic endoscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), Laser Therapy and Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR/ESD).

His current research includes the investigation and treatment of Barrett's oesophagus. He is also the Chief Investigator for the role of remifentanyl as a sedative agent in endoscopy.

Qualifications & Accreditations

He trained at University College London School of Medicine, (86 - 92) and was a Specialist Registrar in Gastroenterology, North Thames (96 - 04), and research Registrar St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospital (98 -02).

He completed a Clinical Fellowship in Therapeutic Endoscopy and Endoscopic Ultrasound at Concord Hospital, Sydney, Australia (04 -05) and a Fellowship in Endoscopic submucosal Resection (minimally invasive endoscopic surgery) at the National Cancer Centre, Tokyo, Japan (07)
